West Virginia State Senator Mike Stuart (R) promised senators Thursday (July 31) he would set up an abuse recovery and response team for Medicaid waste if confirmed as HHS’ top legal counsel, continuing work he started as a U.S. attorney under the first Trump administration where he led efforts to recover Medicare and Medicaid funds from bad actors in West Virginia -- though Democrats heavily scrutinized Stuart’s stances on enforcing the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) and his approach to addressing the opioid abuse epidemic.
