Group purchasing organization (GPO) advocates are hailing a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report released before Thanksgiving as affirming that the industry can self-regulate and save hospitals money. The GAO report found that the funding structure for GPOs may have implications for Medicare costs if hospitals are underreporting administrative fee revenues they get from GPOs, but did not find problems with the way GPOs themselves operate.
