CRS: Federal Surprise Billing Legislation Would Preempt State Laws

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) warned federal lawmakers that any forthcoming surprise billing legislation should consider state laws on the subject as well as the potential for litigation over any set payment rates. The report, released April 15, comes as Capitol Hill’s interest on surprise medical bills reaches a fever pitch -- earlier this month the House held its first hearing on the topic and a group of bipartisan senators is expected to soon release comprehensive legislation on the subject...
