The California legislature sent a bill to Governor Gavin Newsom’s (D) desk that would require state health plans and insurers that use artificial intelligence tools for prior authorization and coverage decisions to comply with guardrails like basing decisions an enrollee’s clinical or medical data, making it one of the first state bills to specifically regulate AI used by payers.
