The Senate health committee held its first hearing Wednesday (June 27) on how to control health care costs, and while Chair Lamar Alexander (R-TN) expressed concern with Medicare spending and how much of the federal budget Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security consume, academics at the hearing said Medicare's per-capita costs have been low for many years and it's difficult to predict government spending.
