"We applaud Senators Charles Grassley (R-IA), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), John Breaux (D-LA) and Jim Jeffords (I-VT) for their focus on the issue of prescription drugs, but, after carefully reviewing legislative language, we believe it fails to meet the needs of seniors. In many important aspects, the proposal being prepared mirrors the poorly conceived legislation passed by the House last month. At least part of the proposal would rely on private, for-profit insurance carriers to define the prescription drug benefit available.

"The President's Council on Bioethics issued a report today that rightly condemns human reproductive cloning. Significantly, the President's hand-picked Council did not support efforts by the President and others - including a bill by Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) - to ban critically important stem cell research that offers such hope to millions of Americans with incurable diseases.

WASHINGTON - As author of the Human Cloning Prohibition Act (S. 1899), U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback released the following statement today reacting to the President's Council on Bioethics recommendation on cloning.

The President's Council on Bioethics has recommended that President Bush support a permanent ban on what many refer to as human reproductive cloning, and a moratorium on what is sometimes known as research, or so-called "therapeutic" cloning.
