The new Congressional Budget Office (CBO) budget outlook says increased spending and a "sharp decline in tax revenues" will reduce the projected surplus through 2012 by $1.4 trillion. The surplus is now estimated to be $1 trillion through 2012, with most of it being realized after last year's tax cuts expire in 2010. The CBO report prompted Office of Management and Budget Director Mitchell Daniels to call for controls on spending.

Stem cells from bone marrow cannot transform into brain cells

HOUSTON--(Aug. 23, 2002)--Although previous research has suggested that adult bone marrow stem cells could produce the kinds of cells usually found in the brain, it now appears this is not a common occurrence and may only happen under special experimental conditions, said researchers at Baylor College of Medicine in a report in the Aug. 23 issue of Science.

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today named the 21 members of the Secretary's Council on Public Health Preparedness, which will advise the department on appropriate actions to prepare for and respond to public health emergencies, including acts of bioterrorism.

D. A. Henderson, M.D., the Secretary's principal science advisor for public health preparedness, will chair the Council on Public Health Preparedness. The panel's first meeting will take place Aug. 26-27 in Washington.
