AMA: Answers needed about widespread smallpox vaccination

For immediate release

October 7, 2002

Statement attributable to:

Timothy Flaherty, MD

AMA Trustee

In an Oct. 8 letter, HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson says there "is no need for the Senate to pursue" bipartisan legislation enabling states to cover prenatal care, delivery and postpartum care under the State Children's Health Insurance Program. A group of bipartisan senators has been pressing for passage of such legislation.

October 9, 2002

The Honorable Trent Lott

Republican Leader

U.S. Senate

Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Senator Lott:

The legislative session is drawing to a close with no Medicare drug coverage in sight. Once again, after years of waiting and with drug costs soaring, beneficiaries and their families find that they get no help from Congress. What they face instead is yet another round of provider "givebacks" that will raise their Part B premiums.
