The American Hospital Association says it is happy the panel called for "relief from overly burdensome and irrelevant patient assessment tools; better coordination of the orderly release of new requirements; clarification of rules governing emergency care and more consistency and reliability from contractors that process Medicare claims and advise hospitals." The call for streamlined record keeping and reporting requirements is "particularly welcome news for small and rural hospitals," AHA adds. The Federation of American Hospitals says the report is a constructive step forward.

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced the selection of 10 major metropolitan areas that will participate in HHS' Urban Partnership Initiative -- a new effort designed to help communities that continue to have relatively high concentrations of welfare recipients.

The fiscal condition of the nation's states is the worst since World War II, according to a new report released Nov. 25 by the National Governors Association and National Association of State Budget Officers. The report, titled The Fiscal Survey of States, cites escalating Medicaid costs as one of the key factors contributing to the bleak budget outlook. The states are upset that Congress adjourned without passing legislation that would have provided fiscal relief to states through a combination of social services block grants and increased federal Medicaid funds.

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced a $5.9 million contract to improve the department's collection and reporting of patient safety data. The two-year contract will lead to the development of a new Web-based system that will integrate and simplify existing systems now operated by several HHS agencies to improve reporting and make the systems easier for frontline medical care providers to use.
