FDA today approved a novel treatment regime for one type of non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (NHL) that for the first time includes a monoclonal antibody that is combined with a radioactive chemical. The product, Zevalin, must be used along with Rituxan, an already approved biotechnology product for the disease -- low-grade B-cell NHL. It is approved for patients who have not responded to standard chemotherapy treatments or to the use of Rituxan alone.

MEDICARE TO EXPAND USE OF PET FOR PATIENTS WITH HEART DISEASE

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced today that it intends to cover positron emission tomography (PET) for use in determining whether certain Medicare patients are good candidates for revascularization -- procedures to improve blood flow to the heart.

A national coverage decision to be issued by CMS will make PET available as a primary or initial diagnostic study for determining myocardial viability in patients with ischemic heart disease.
