In July of 2000, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) recommended tough new health standards to protect pregnant women and infants from mercury contamination of seafood. Despite adoption by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and repeated urging by the NAS and Congress, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has refused to adopt the NAS standard.
