Report: PBMs In Massachusetts Make $25M Annually From Spread Pricing

Pharmacy benefit managers made about $25 million in a year from spread pricing in the Massachusetts’ Medicaid program, according to a study released Thursday (April 22) by the Massachusetts Independent Pharmacists Association (MIPA). MIPA hopes the findings will spur Massachusetts legislators to ban spread pricing. Spread pricing refers to the undisclosed share of money that PBMs keep from insurers when PBMs reimburse pharmacies for dispensing drugs, typically generics.
