Senate Finance Committee Advances Noncontroversial Opioid Package

The Senate Finance Committee unanimously approved a package of opioid-related legislation Tuesday (June 12) that would make modest tweaks to Medicare and Medicaid in hopes of reducing opioid abuse in those programs. Committee Chair Orrin Hatch (R-UT) described the proposed changes -- which include tighter monitoring of over-prescribers and at-risk beneficiaries, expanding coverage for telehealth and promoting non-opioid pain management -- as noncontroversial, and some Democrats called on the committee to do more to respond to the opioid crisis.
