Insurers Expect Sicker Risk Pools As Redeterminations Kick-In

Several health insurers that offer Medicaid managed care expect their risk pools will be sicker as the redetermination process kicks in, and while they all express confidence that states will ultimately adjust pay rates to compensate for the unhealthier patients, one major insurer, Centene, warns there could be a temporary “disconnect” between the acuity of Medicaid risk pools and pay rates, and the company has lowered its earnings expectations for 2024 as a result.
