Medicare trustees warn that by 2048 physician pay will be worse under the new formula than under the Sustainable Growth Rate formula that Congress replaced, unless providers change how they deliver care or Congress steps in to increase pay rates -- a prognosis similar to the CMS actuary's warning in April that the new formula is not a permanent fix but instead a policy that Congress will have to revisit in 10 years to stave off major pay cuts.
